Making a Difference
Mahin Ansari is a Houston native whose work beautifully weaves together faith, justice, and community service. With an educational background in sign language interpreting and history, Mahin went on to earn a Master’s in Social Work (LMSW) and a Juris Doctor in Law. She is licensed to practice social work and interpreting in Texas, along with law in both Texas and Minnesota. Her journey into sign language began with a curiosity for a language not widely used, which was an early sign of her commitment to serving communities often overlooked.
Coming from an immigrant family, Mahin was drawn to law as a way to support women and children impacted by abuse, family separation, and deportation. For more than five years, she has been part of the legal community, and for the past three years, she has worked closely with Afghan refugees, spearheading asylum cases and helping families rebuild their lives. She also stays current on immigration policy changes and trains attorneys to serve as pro bono advocates, expanding access to justice far beyond her own caseload.
Mahin’s work is deeply rooted in her Muslim faith, which she believes calls for uplifting others and serving people of all backgrounds. She is especially passionate about ensuring women know and can exercise their rights, noting that Islam strongly upholds women’s dignity and agency. Wearing her hijab proudly in professional spaces, Mahin sees herself as an example of how a Muslim woman can lead, serve, and practice her faith openly.
Among the projects she is most proud of includes representing an ex-Muslim client who was surprised to learn, after working together, that their advocate was a practicing Muslim. For Mahin, this moment captured the heart of her values: ethical service, open-mindedness, and helping people regardless of race, religion, or gender. She considers it a privilege to work in the nonprofit sector and hopes her story inspires greater awareness, education, and collaboration across communities to better support those in need.
